Spirit Of JiuJitsu represents a historic, nationwide first in collegiate martial arts architecture. Founded by Coach Jeremiah Washington, this division bridges academic structure with the culture of the art, making California State University, Stanislaus, the blueprint for university Jiu-Jitsu.
Rather than fitting into standard, rigid athletic boxes, Coach Jeremiah engineered an entirely unique model on campus, establishing an unprecedented path for how Jiu-Jitsu is funded, taught, and integrated into higher education.
Engine 1: The University-Employed Group X Program
A Historic First in Collegiate Recreation
Coach Jeremiah Washington holds a historic distinction as the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach to be directly employed and compensated by the university infrastructure to design and lead a campus-wide Jiu-Jitsu curriculum.
Operating as part of Campus Recreation, this division serves as a high-capacity, institutional engine that introduces the university community to the art through structured movement mechanics.
Academic Movement Design: Integrating principles of Kinesiology and Communication Studies, the curriculum optimizes human movement and learning for students of all backgrounds.
The Culture of Trust: We bypass standard corporate fitness metrics to build an environment centered on community, mutual respect, and physical fitness.
Institutional Impact: Engineered from a grassroots concept into a powerhouse reality, it stands as the highest-capacity, top-attended Group X recreation program in campus history.
Engine 2: The RSO BJJ Culture Club
A National First in Student Organization Architecture
While most university Jiu-Jitsu programs are forced into strict intramural or club sports frameworks, the Spirit Of JiuJitsu Club at Stan State made history as the first Registered Student Organization (RSO) Culture Club in the nation dedicated entirely to the subject of Jiu-Jitsu.
The RSO is a student-led, community-focused sanctuary where the art is the lifestyle, the philosophy, and the connective tissue.
A Culture, Not a Requirement: Because it is built as a culture club, the focus is entirely on student community, shared truth, personal growth, and studying the rich history and philosophy of the gentle art.
The Organic Competitive Spark: While competition is never a requirement of the culture club, the elite standard of Coach Jeremiah's instruction naturally ignited a competitive fire. Out of this unique environment rose a home-grown tournament team that independently enters major regional and national circuits (Under the banner of Spirit Of Jiujitsu)—consistently out-ranking massive, multi-million dollar commercial academies at the US Open, Jiu-Jitsu World League, and BJJ Tour All-Stars.
Developing Servant-Leaders: The RSO empowers students to organize, mentor, and protect one another, learning how to handle high-pressure environments on the mat so they can navigate life off the mat.
